Three Reasons Why the World Has to End

Three Reasons Why the World Has to End

This is part one of a three-part post in my Theology 101 Series. Part one is – Three Reasons Why the World Has to End. Part two will be – Three Things to Do BEFORE The World Ends. Part three will be, "Three Ways the World Will Be Different After it Ends."

There is nothing like a pesky world crisis to make people stop in their tracks and think about their mortality and even the end of the world.

To meet this growing supply of fear, a whole host of preachers, pundits and snake oil salesmen are happy to sell you their books and predictions about what date and time Jesus will return and the world will come to an end. They know this because... they have studied it! Really.

Have you ever noticed that almost everyone who talks about the end of the world talks about the WHEN? If this moon turns red, or if that many days has elapsed, or if such and such country invades another country, for sure we can know WHEN the world is going to come to an end.

Heck, even mockers talk about the WHEN.

“Knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming?”... (ESV emphasis mine).

Put another way, “If the Lord is going to come again, then when is it? Huh? Lots of people have said it, but it hasn't happened, so I refuse to believe it!”

***Parenthetical Note – Notice that the reason scoffers reject the Lord's coming (or the Lord Himself) is because they are “following their own sinful desires!” In other words, they are not rejecting the Lord because they don't believe it intellectually, they are rejecting the Lord, because they don't want anyone, including their Maker telling them what to do. Atheists of the world unite by declaring that they have an intellectual problem with God. They don't. They have a MORAL problem with God.

But instead of asking about the “WHEN,” maybe, just maybe, we should be asking a different question.

WHY?

Why is the world going to end? Why is the Lord going to return?

Those are questions we can answer. And we can answer them with absolute certainty. We know the answer to these questions because the Bible, God's Holy Word is VERY CLEAR about the “WHY.”

So following are three reasons why the world has to end.

1. You and I Are Busted

God's Word is very clear on this point. The reason why the world is broken is because mankind (Adam and Eve – our first parents), rebelled against God. They were given dominion (overseers)
of the whole Creation, and they blew it. Instead of ruling over the world (God's Creation) God's way, they decided to try it their way (and Satan's way).

Frank Sinatra may be famous for singing his hit song, “I did it my way,” but Adam and Eve wrote the lyrics.

The Bible says that you and I inherited the sin nature of our physical and spiritual parents.

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.” (Romans 5:12, ESV)

The Prophet, Isaiah puts it like this...

"All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way"... (Isaiah 53:6, NKJV)

But not only are WE broken, but in fact, the whole universe is broken!

2. The World As We Know it is Broken

As a result of their disobedience, not only Adam and Eve, but the whole cosmos fell under the curse. The curse is really just a broken Creation. Nothing works the way that God intended it to work.

Check out Genesis 3:16-19

To the woman He said:

“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
In pain you shall bring forth children..."

And to Adam, because he acted weak and caved...

17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:

“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”

In Romans 8:21-22, St. Paul explains this further...

21 "because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now."

Notice here what Paul says, that the entire creation is in the “bondage of corruption.”

Yes my friend, the world is in bondage. The cosmos is in bondage and most importantly, you are in bondage. You are confined to a broken world, locked up in your own sin and you can't get out of it. Not even going to Mars will solve your problem.

3. Only One Man Has the Skills to Fix It

There is a third reason why the world has to end. There is only ONE MAN who has ever lived who has the authority and skills to fix our problems. That man is Jesus, the Christ (the Messiah)!

The same passage (Romans 5) which tells us that EVERY man is broken, also tells us that there is only ONE MAN who is able to repair the breach. It's not Super Man. It's not Tony Stark. It's not Thor. All of them are mere shadows of the one and only Son of God.

Listen to this amazing news...

6 "For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

17 For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ."

That is great news! Because of Jesus death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead, we can can be saved from death.

But how does this answer the question... “Why does the world have to end?” The answer is found in the same passage we looked at earlier, Romans 8:20-22

20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. (ESV – Emphasis Mine).

Not only you and I, but the WHOLE WORLD needs to be set free from its bondage.

When is the world going to end? No one knows. The Bible tells us that NOT EVEN THE ANGELS, NOT EVEN JESUS HIMSELF knows the day or the hour...

“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.” (Matthew 24:36, KJV).

Stop worrying about the WHEN and start thinking about the WHY. On the day that God brings this world to an end, you will have no more time to think about the WHEN. It will be done. But as long as you have today. As long as you have this minute. As long as you have breath in your lungs (which many people are losing even as you read this now), you have time to think about the WHY.

The answer, as we have see is YOU and ME. We are the reason WHY the world is going to end. It is because or our sin and rebellion against God.

The good news is... the world is gonna have to wait to be free of it's bondage. But you don't have to wait. You can be free of your bondage right now.

Do this...

Get on your knees right now and pray this prayer (if you really mean it).

“God, I know that I have sinned against you. I know that I have gone my own way instead of going your way. I ask now, because of the blood and death of your Son Jesus on the Cross, that you forgive me of my sin. And because Jesus was raised from the dead to conquer death, give me victory over death and sin for as long as I live.”

If you pray this prayer from your heart, God will listen to you. He is your loving Heavenly Father and He doesn't want you to live in bondage and death. He wants you to live in freedom and life.

Choose life.
